STOW - Arthur Merle Sell, born January 31, 1931, passed away on April 20, 2024, surrounded by four generations of his family.
He was the fifth son of fourteen children born to James and Blanche (Coulter) Sell in Corsica, Pennsylvania. Merle graduated from Madera High School in Madera, Pennsylvania. He married Dorothy Mae Jones on July 1, 1951, in Ramey, PA. Merle and Dorothy lived in Stow, Ohio until 1978 when they moved to Glendale, Peoria, and Sun City West, Arizona. Merle returned to live in Stow in 2004 to be near his beloved family, Elsie Harriman, and friends.
Dad was a proud, award-winning truck driver credited with saving lives and making friends wherever he went. His smile and friendliness were a gift to all who knew him. He was an active charter member of United Methodist Church in Stow and often was a liturgist, usher, Sunday School teacher, and more. Dad was a Mason and was a member of Star Lodge 187 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He loved living at Silver Lake Towers, camping, family events, and watching baseball.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy; his parents, and his brothers, Jim, Ron, Charlie, Emery, Denny, Al, and his sisters, Coralie Sell and Rose Weaver. He is survived by his companion of 20 years, Elsie Harriman; children, Pamela Oviatt, (Jeff), Debra Joy Sell, Merlene (Red) Durkit (Steve); grandchildren, Chad Oviatt (Marianne), Tim Schmitt (Gayla), Allison Garcia, Justin Oviatt, Kallie Durkit (Harrison Dilday), and Kasie Durkit; his great grandchildren, Ethan Schmitt, Connor Oviatt, Laney Schmitt, Kayla Garcia, Carter Oviatt, and Jacob Garcia. He is also survived by his siblings, Leon (Julie), Velma Woodford, Daryl (Patty), Joe (Joyce), and Larry (Barb), as well as a host of nieces, and nephews.
Merle’s family would like to especially thank extended family and friends for being such a special part of his life. He loved those times he spent with all of you.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at 2:30 PM, at Redmon Funeral Home, 3633 Darrow Road, Stow 44224, where family and friends can join the family for calling hours from 12:30 - 2:30 PM.
