Augustus (Gus) A. Mercurio, Jr.

HUDSON - Augustus (Gus) A. Mercurio, Jr., born January 20, 1936, passed away on January 22, 2023. Gus is best remembered as a family oriented, loving, and caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he lived in the Akron, Ohio area most of his life. He was a 1957 graduate of Pennsylvania State University, earning a degree in Chemical Engineering.

Gus was employed by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, (41 years’ of service), where he managed a team of engineers that pioneered computer-aided design. His early adoption of computing technology continued at home where he notably wrote custom applications, including an order tracking and inventory system used by a local youth sports fundraiser. He was an avid Cleveland sports fan and coached many of his sons’ athletic teams.

Gus was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He enjoyed his retirement days sharing time between Fort Myers, FL and Cuyahoga Falls, OH residences, enjoying golf, and volunteering at St. Thomas Hospital, (Akron, OH), and Lee Memorial Hospital, (Fort Myers, FL).

Gus was preceded in death by his parents, Augustus A. Sr. and Thelma C., (nee Greybill), Mercurio, and brother, Michael. Gus will be sadly missed by his wife of 36 years, Marlene K., (nee Wright), Mercurio; sons, Michael (Renee) of The Colony, TX, Paul (Monica) of Dublin, OH, David (Matilda) of St. Cloud, MN, and John (Kathy) of Montgomery, OH; step-daughter, Valerie (David) Helmsetter of Cleveland, TN; step-sons, Rev. Steven (Cathy) Millar of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Matthew (Deana) Millar of Bradenton, FL, and Douglas Millar of Redwood City, CA; sisters, Susan Lentz of North Fort Myers, FL, and Barbara (Vincent) Plumbo, of Lancaster, PA; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, and three step-great grandchildren.

Gus’ family wishes to thank all of his healthcare professionals for their compassion and care. A private service will be scheduled at a later date.
