Frederick "Fred" George Starr

May 15, 1937 — April 22, 2022

AKRON - It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to a great man. Fred Starr passed away peacefully on Friday, April 22, 2022, surrounded by loving family. Fred was many things: Husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend to all, helper, neighbor, and gentleman. According to his mother, Fred was born on 5/17. The doctor that was present at his home birth listed the birth date as 5/15. Fred always said his mother would never lie so one of his favorite things to tell people when asked "how tall are you?" was to cheerfully reply: "I am 5'17", which is also my birthday!" After high school, Fred served four years in the Air Force. Taking advantage of the GI Bill, he went to electronics school. Working for RCA, he gradually went from TV technician to the new technology of computer phone systems, and he loved to proudly point out all the northeast Ohio companies whose systems he installed. Fred loved to call "going to work" "going to play." Retiring, (for the first time), in 1999, Fred had five more "retirements", including title runner, courtesy driver, and bus attendant for the Woodridge Local School District. Fred had a wonderful sense of humor. As he would often tell his many friends, he was so sweet that he didn't need sugar in his coffee. The many people who loved him never left being with him without a big hug and an, "I love you", before saying goodbye. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Georgianna Starr, and brothers, Edward, Richard, Jerry, and David. He is survived by Kay, the "married woman he slept with", for 57 years; their children, Eric (Jessica), Ann (Stephen), Karen, Paul (Julie); their grandchildren, Zach, Nikolai, Micah, Casey, Vaughn, Ever, Georgia, and Opal, and siblings, Sandra White, Mary Markel, Tom (Jan), Sue Ferris (Dave), and Sarah Gengler (Harvey). The family wishes to thank the ICU staff at Akron General for their compassionate care of Fred and the family. The Starr Family will receive friends from 10 AM to 1 PM on Thursday, April 28 at Church of Our Saviour, 471 Crosby Street, Akron, Ohio 44302. Funeral liturgy at 1 PM immediately followed by a lunch reception. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity in Fred's name . . . and don't forget to tell your family and friends, "I love you."
