James H. Aungst

April 27, 1926 — May 6, 2022

HUDSON - James H. Aungst, 96, died after a brief illness on May 6, 2022, with his family by his side.

A proud World War II veteran, Jim was married for 58 years to Carolyn R. Aungst who preceded him death in 2014. He is survived by his children, Holle, Heide (Joe Manfredi), and Grant (Brandy); grandchildren, Joseph, Alessandra, and Carolina Manfredi; and Abigail, Lillian, and Nikolas Aungst. He is also survived by four nieces and one cousin. His sister, Virginia preceded him in death.

Jim cultivated gardens and friendships throughout his life. His connections ran deep, and in any conversation with anyone, he would say, “Did you know so-and-so?” He was born at home in Fayette, Ohio to Harley and Jane on April 27, 1926. After Harley’s sudden death when Jim was only eight-months old, Jane raised him and his sister by running a beauty shop from her home. Jim, always a whiz at science, medicine, and math, served as a medic in the Philippines in World War II, and then worked in sales and marketing in the chemical field at multiple companies throughout his career. He met Carolyn on a blind date in 1956, and they married six months later. Jim’s passions included tennis, gardening, and reading. He read multiple books each week and volunteered at both the Hudson and Stow libraries. For years, he was a member of the Hudson Tennis Club, the Hudson and Kent Garden Clubs, and the Hudson Senior Citizens where at different times he held multiple positions including Co-President and Programming Manager.

A memorial celebration of Jim’s life will take place Saturday, May 21 at 10:30 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Hudson, (within Christ Church Episcopal), 21 Aurora Street, Hudson, OH 44236.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to the First Presbyterian Church or “In Honor of Jim Aungst” for the purchase of large print books to Hudson Library and Historical Society, 96 Library Street, Hudson, OH 44236.
