STOW - Jean A. (Point) Call, the daughter of Archie and Metta (Roberts) Point (of Tallmadge, Ohio) passed away on April 30, 2022. Her husband of over 75 years, Charles E. Call, preceded her passing on August 20, 2020. Jean leaves behind their son, Howard (Theresa) and daughter, Suzanne C. Cryst (Michael); six grandchildren, Leeann (Bill) Bush, Cathy (Rob) Cunningham, Charles (Elissa) Call, Amanda (Mike) Ray, Mike “MJ” Cryst (Kaila Miller), and Laura Cryst (Peter Simon); 20 great grandchildren; two nephews - Jeff (Jan) Call and Stephen Point, and two nieces - Sarah Call (Steve) and Julie (Martin) Kinsman.

A graduate of Tallmadge High School, Jean was a woman of many talents as she supported the continuation of the family farm by raising chickens and selling eggs, straw, produce, and maple syrup; assisted in producing wheat, corn, hay, trees, and worked at producing maple syrup each spring. Jean also taught a variety of craft classes, caned chairs, made custom hats and a variety of craft items that she sold. The most notable talent was Jean’s “green thumb” and her beloved red geraniums that she propagated each year; her famous chicken and noodles; and canned jams, jellies, and pickles that she shared with many households.

Many farm tours of children, college students, and adults both local and international, visited Calls Farm to gain knowledge of how American Farming had evolved, which included the role of the modern-day farm wife. Numerous articles, and historical interviews are included in Jean and Charles’s vitae.

Jean was a member of Darrow Street Grange #751 of which she had been a member since 1938 and held many supporting positions with some of the most memorable being the catering of 25-30 dinners a year at the Darrowstreet Grange Hall to support the organization. This skill set spilled over to the Summit County Agricultural Society’s beginnings in 1957 as a means to raise funds for buildings, and developing the site in Tallmadge, Ohio to promote Summit County youth and their activities.

Ever the busy volunteer, Jean was a member and past president of the Summit County Farm Bureau; served on the Ohio State Parks and Recreation Board; member of Tallmadge Country Study Club; Past present of Stow Woodland PTA; 4-H Advisor for five years and then for many years a 4-H qualified judge for sewing and cooking/nutrition projects: past member of Stow Historical Society and instrumental in moving and preserving the Starr House; and visionary and lead for creating the Summit County Farm Bureau Farm Museum at the Summit County Fairgrounds.

Charles frequently lauded Jean for her behind the scenes support and the financial backbone of the farm’s success.
