FAIRLAWN - Mildred (Millie) Poppenhouse , 98, passed away on March 28, 2025.
Born in Akron, Millie was a dedicated mother who raised seven children and later retired as a teacher from the Akron and Canton Public Schools. She was a graduate of the University of Akron and was a member of Theta Phi Alpha sorority. As one of her many community activities, Millie organized a neighborhood book club in Firestone Park for all the kids.
She had a passion for playing golf, bridge, and boating. She enjoyed her “skinny club” group, which met each summer for a week of diet, fun, and exercise. She and her husband, Dick, shared a love of travel and enjoyed planning adventures throughout Europe with their close-knit travel group. Millie and Dick’s lake house was often a place for gathering of family and friends.
Millie found immense joy in her grandchildren, especially in the traditions of cooking and playing cards after dinner. Her famous Christmas cut-out cookies became a cherished family tradition.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; children, Linda Poppenhouse and Thomas Poppenhouse; siblings, Marie Stadelman, Arthur Gorman, and Carl Gorman, and son-in-law, Jack Muehlheim. Millie is survived by her children, Rick (Pat) Poppenhouse, Patty Muehlheim, Kathy (Jeff) Conrad, Sarah Poppenhouse, and Lawrence (Kimberly) Poppenhouse, and daughter-in-law, Sharon Poppenhouse.
