Neil A. Maly

February 28, 1938 — April 29, 2024

TALLMADGE - Neil A. Maly, 86, passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on April 29, 2024.

Neil was born in Cleveland on February 28, 1938, to his loving parents, the Reverend Arthur S. Maly and Elsie (Conway) Maly. Before graduating from North High School in Akron, he spent his youth delivering newspapers in the neighborhood, earning his Eagle Scout award, and competing in high jump.

He graduated from Baldwin Wallace College with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1960 and later furthered his education with a master’s degree from The University of Akron. He worked as a research chemist at Goodyear for 41 years, garnering 40 patents and trade secrets, and retiring in 2001. He spent the following 20 years working seasonally for H&R Block.

Anyone who met Neil soon learned the two most important things in his life were his faith and his family. He was a devout Christian from childhood, spending summers at Lakeside conferences. Blessed with a strong tenor voice, he sang in many church choirs in his life: North Hill United Methodist, First Congregational Church of Tallmadge, and most recently, at The Chapel in Akron, where he especially enjoyed his Sunday School class, Fellow Heirs 1.

He met his soul mate and the love of his life, Carol (Moore) Maly, on a blind date, and they were married in April of 1961; they recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary together. He was a loving, selfless father to his three children: Karen Watson of Jackson Center, PA, Susan (Doug) Yeager of Hilliard, Ohio, and Marc Maly of Lancaster, PA. He will be missed by his four grandchildren: Adam Watson, Stephen Yeager (Sophia), Rachel Goss (Nolan), and Christopher Yeager (McKenzie), as well as two great grandchildren, Cohen and Raegan. He is also survived by his brother, Rev. David Maly (Carmen) of Medina, and a sister-in-law, B.J. Fairhurst, of Wooster.

A lifelong lover of learning, Neil enjoyed traveling to new places, body surfing in the ocean, watching Fox News, and hiking, completing the yearly Summit Metro Park Spree each fall, his last at age 85.

Visitation to honor Neil’s legacy will be held Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Redmon Funeral Home in Stow, from 6 - 8 PM. A celebration of life service will take place at The Chapel, 135 Fir Hill, Akron, in the Memorial Chapel, on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to World Vision , P.O. Box 9716, Federal Way, WA 98063, or Haven of Rest Ministries , 175 East Market Street, Akron, OH 44308, ministries that Neil felt strongly about.

His family rejoices that Neil is at last “better than I deserve and truly blessed.”
