Pauline Lamp Hornickel

d. November 18, 2022

HUDSON - Pauline Lamp Hornickel passed away on November 18, 2022, after several months of declining health.

A resident of Hudson, Ohio, for more than 50 years, Polly was born in Monongahela, Pennsylvania to Clyde B. Lamp, Sr., MD and Marie Ludwig Lamp. In addition to Monongahela and Hudson, Polly also lived for 14 years in Boardman, Ohio.

After graduation with a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Margaret Morrison Carnegie College of what is now Carnegie Mellon University, Polly served her nation in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist’s Mate after the end of World War II.  After the Navy, Polly worked at Balch Flavor Company in Pittsburgh for a few years.

She married John Clark Hornickel in August 1950 and made a home with Jack for two-thirds of a century during his business career in Large Lamp Sales with the General Electric Company in Monongahela, Boardman, and Hudson, and in retirement in Hudson.

Predeceased by her parents; husband; sister, Marie Lamp Stewart, and daughter, Anne Marie Hornickel Yuska, Polly is survived by brother, Clyde B. Lamp, Jr., MD; son, John H. Hornickel; grandchildren, Jane Marie Hornickel Kazantsev, John Gordon “Jack” Hornickel, Paul Thomas Yuska, and Ellen Elizabeth Yuska; great grandchildren, Nina Marie Kazantsev and Lily Anne Kazantsev; nephews, Ellsworth Stewart and Clyde B. Lamp, III; nieces, Joyce Stewart Dutcher and Jere Lamp; daughter-in-law, Jill Gledhill Hornickel; son-in-law, Thomas P. Yuska; grandson-in-law, Roman V. Kazantsev, and granddaughter-in-law, Faith E. Gilbert.

Polly loved the beautiful things of life: family, friends, flowers, fashion, and food, but most of all, her family. To them, she was known as “Gran,” a name she chose to be called before Jane, her first grandchild, was born.  Her tremendous and constant devotion to family and friends was supported by her continuous communications with them, so much so that the “Gran News Network” or “GNN,” became the prime source of the latest family news, especially after she was widowed in 2016.

Polly was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hudson for 50+ years. She traveled with Jack to Europe, Asia, and Australia.  She was a member of the Akron Women’s City Club for 20+ years.  She was an active member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority from her college years forward. She enjoyed being in bridge clubs throughout her adult life.  She lived her life befitting of being a member of America’s Greatest Generation.

Per Polly’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or memorial service.   Burial alongside her husband will be private in Monongahela.
