STOW - Sterling (Chuck) Hurst, 83, passed away on December 12, 2022.
Chuck was the loving husband of Beverly, (nee Hanic), for a golden 50 years, loving father of Todd (Jamie), grandfather of his cherished grandchildren, Anna, Anderson and Claire. Known as Uncle Shug to his wonderful nephews, Steve, Jim, Bob, Joe, and Ted, and caring friend of anyone God placed in his path. Family meant everything to him and everyone he met he considered in his family.
Born in Clarksburg, WV to Homer and Anna Hurst, he was blessed to be the youngest of six children - Bob, Betty, Jack, Spurgeon, and Dudley. Chuck graduated from Bristol High School in 1957 as Class President and Captain of the Basketball and Football teams.
Chuck moved to Akron following high school and was a member of the U.S. Army National Guard and graduated from the University of Akron. He was employed by the Better Business Bureau, an executive at the M. O’Neill Company in Akron, and owner of Hurst Graphics for over 20 years until retirement, when he began volunteering with SCORE to continue his giving back that he began with Rotary and other organizations during his years.
Chuck and Beverly met in June of 1970, were married two years later and home became Stow. Beverly was all he ever dreamed of in a spouse and he would tell people how fortunate he was to be given such a blessing to share his life with. They were the perfect match of completely loving each other as God desired, and enjoyed great times while also persevering through difficult times. Hearing Beverly call him “Chucky” was all you ever needed to hear to understand this love.
After years of visiting his brother, (Spurgeon), and sister-in-law, (Janie), and treating his nephews as his own, in 1974 their son Todd was born. Chuck was an incredibly involved husband and father never missing any of his youth events from school, sports or church, and again treating all of the other children that came through the Hurst house as his own. He coached many of his teams. The simple things in life were taught to be appreciated like drives through the country on weekends to explore, visiting lakes to swim, sports in the backyard, and picnics . . . anything with family. Chuck and Beverly attended all sporting events from youth, through high school and even drove out to all college games to support their son.
Jamie was lovingly added to the Hurst family in 2002, when she and Todd were married and he finally had a daughter to spoil with “Hello Darling”, “Hi Jame!” and “How’s my favorite daughter-in-law?!?”. He loved that his son had been as fortunate to find someone he loved as much as he loved Beverly.
When he thought he couldn’t be happier, the life he and Beverly began together decades before was defined by the new statement he told everyone . . . “You don’t think you could love anyone as much as your own children until you have grandchildren." Anna, Anderson, and Claire brought Chuck and Beverly much joy. From attending all of their school performances, birthdays, days together at Silver Lake beach, sports, sharing special breakfasts together, car shows and just watching them grow up within a loving family. Their “Packa” as they called him, was as entangled in their heart as much as he was wrapped around their fingers. He had all he had ever asked for.
God has again called upon the gentle Patriarch of the family to lead . . . Sterling, Chucky, Uncle Shug, Packa, and Dad is now home.
