STOW - Verne T. Rowland, 92, died September 9, 2022. Born in Newport, OH, he moved to Stow as a young boy, and graduated from Stow High School, where he excelled as an athlete. Verne was a U.S. Army veteran, training soldiers during the Korean war in chemical warfare and use of flamethrowers. Mr. Rowland, along with his brother, Harold, has continued to meet at McDonald’s for many years with a group of other veterans. Verne like to travel and especially loved to hike with friends and family. He has hiked the Akron Metro trails hiking spree since 1965 and has the hiking staff with medals to prove it! Verne was an avid sports fan, especially baseball, and played in the Silver League of softball until his 80’s, “retiring” when his team won the championship. Mr. Rowland had retired as a truck driver with Tramonte Distributing, was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Akron, and Teamsters Local 348. Preceded in death by his wife, Connie “Babe” Rowland, and son, Steven, he is survived by son, Scott (Laurie); daughter, Sherry; son, Stuart; grandsons, Mitchell and Landon; and brother, Harold Rowland. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM at Redmon Funeral Home, 3633 Darrow Road, Stow, after which Pastor Zac Kohl will conduct a funeral service. Private burial Stow Cemetery.
