Alejo began his medical career as a resident in surgery at St. Vincent Charity Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio from 1961 to 1965. Throughout his life, he traveled far and wide with his wife and children. Alejo was also a devoted Catholic who transferred his deeply held values to his children as a parishioner of St. Albert the Great in North Royalton and later at St. Mary in Hudson.
